There were nearly 1,000 reported deer-vehicle crashes on Long Island in 2024, the latest year available and the highest number on record, according to data from the Department of Motor Vehicles.
No person has been killed in a deer-vehicle crash on Long Island in recent years, but 44 were injured in 2024, and many of the animals involved die.
Biologists say the crashes — which are most common during mating season from October to December — reflect a severe deer overpopulation problem that also has negative effects on ecosystems and public health. AAA advises drivers take precautions such as driving slowly, using high beams when appropriate and remembering that deer travel in groups — so if you see one, expect others.
