DOT: Road work to shut Route 25A between Calverton, Ft. Salonga

Short-duration closures and lane shifts are scheduled for about 12 weeks on Route 25A between Calverton and Fort Salonga beginning Monday to allow construction crews to inspect and clean more than 1,400 storm drains.

The 40-mile stretch of road will be affected between Route 25 in Calverton and Bread and Cheese Hollow Road in Fort Salonga from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., according to an advisory issued by the state Department of Transportation.

The work is necessary “to maintain the integrity of the roadway drainage system and preserve the safety of motorists,” the advisory reads.

Efforts will be taken to have a single-travel lane in each direction. Some roadways will be condensed to one lane with alternative eastbound and westbound traffic flow.

The work is part of a $3.8 million project on Long Island to preserve and improve road drainage systems at nine locations.

Because the work is scheduled for off-peak midday hours, “any sluggish traffic should dissipate fairly quickly,” the DOT said.

The project is weather-dependent and may be canceled, postponed or prolonged because of inclement weather, the DOT said.
