Suffolk police Sunday morning received numerous reports of car crashes on Sunrise Highway and the Long Island Expressway in Suffolk County, "possibly due to icy road conditions," and police urged drivers to stay off the roads.

The National Weather Service issued a statement Sunday morning, saying patchy black ice was possible on some roads, and urged drivers to use caution.

Suffolk police received at least three dozen calls about accidents, including for overturned vehicles and vehicles crashed into guardrails.

A public information officer for Suffolk police said it’s hard to say whether icy conditions are to blame for each of the accidents but “definitely avoid the roads and be safe if you have to drive.”

SCPD in a tweet said: "The Suffolk County Police Department has received multiple reports of crashes this morning possibly due to icy road conditions."

The police representative said ramps for exits 43, 47 and 48 on Sunrise Highway were temporarily closed, although it was unclear in which direction, as was the ramp for eastbound Exit 70 on the Long Island Expressway. They were later reopened.

Among the calls into police for accidents were several for overturned vehicles on East Patchogue Yaphank Road and Station Road North in Bellport; on the eastbound LIE at Exit 70 in Manorville; and on westbound Sunrise Service Road and Jerusalem Hollow Road in Center Moriches.

Police also received a call for a vehicle that went into a guardrail on the westbound LIE near Exit 68.

The majority of the calls received were for vehicles crashed on Sunrise Highway and the Long Island Expressway as far west as North Babylon and as far east as Calverton.

Nassau police reported no calls for crashes due to icy conditions.
