The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is warning more than 1 million Jeep owners to park outside due to a risk of the vehicles catching on fire — even with the ignition turned off.

The notice, issued this week by the watchdog safety agency, was announced in conjunction with a recall notice issued by FCA US, Jeep's parent company, regarding 1,076,999 Gladiators and Wranglers from the model years 2021-25.

The issue, NHTSA said, involves an electrical connection in the hydraulic power steering pump, with the agency saying the issue "could cause combustible materials to overheat and potentially catch fire."

The recall notice comes on the heels of an NHTSA investigation that found at least 51 fires — and one injury — tied to the wiring fault. NHTSA said Wednesday owners will be notified of recall details via mail from FCA US sent July 9.

Affected vehicle identification numbers and license plates will be searchable on NHTSA.gov for the recall beginning Thursday. Vehicle owners also can call the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236.

NHTSA is encouraging vehicle owners to download its SaferCar app to stay informed on current or recent recall notifications. For more information on the Jeep recall, NHTSA said owners can contact FCA US customer service at 800-853-1403 or visit recalls.mopar.com.
