Man dies after being hit by train, LIRR says

Service on the Long Island Rail Road's Babylon and Montauk branches was partially suspended Thursday morning when a man was struck and killed by a train, and a truck hit a bridge, the railroad said.

Train service was halted on the Babylon branch for about two hours after a 23-year-old man was hit by a train west of Rockville Centre, the railroad said. The man has not been identified.

East and west trains were restarted at about 6:20 a.m., the railroad said.

Service in both directions also was restored at around the same time between Babylon and Montauk following an over-height vehicle striking an LIRR bridge east of Mastic-Shirley.

Montauk Highway was closed for hours to both east and west motorists between Old Neck Road and Senix Avenue after the truck slammed into the overpass, Suffolk police said. The highway was reopened Thursday afternoon.

The truck driver was taken to a hospital for what appeared to be minor injuries, police added.
