The Port Jefferson and Oyster Bay branches of the Long Island Rail Road  experienced cancellations and delays Monday morning due to a train that struck a downed tree and equipment trouble the MTA said.

As of 9:45 a.m., however, the railroad was reporting trains on the Oyster Bay Branch were on or close to schedule, while the Port Jefferson Branch had one minor delay involving the 9:01 a.m. train from Port Jefferson to Hicksville, which was operating late due to "late-arriving equipment."

The earlier issued caused the 7:16 a.m. train from Oyster Bay to Penn Station  to be canceled due to ongoing equipment trouble.

Commuters  were advised to take the 8:12 a.m. train from Oyster Bay to Long Island City instead and transfer at Jamaica for service to Penn Station, the MTA website said.

On the Port Jefferson line, westbound delays averaged 15 to 45 minutes as of 6:30 a.m., the MTA website said, after a train struck the downed tree near Smithtown. Another train experienced equipment trouble at Port Jefferson.

"Consider taking alternate branches if possible," the website said.

The 4:51 a.m. train from Port Jefferson to Long Island City, Queens, was canceled in Smithtown. Riders were accommodated by the 5:16 a.m. train from Port Jefferson to Long Island City.

The 5:16 a.m. train from Port Jefferson to Long Island City and the 5:53 a.m. from Port Jefferson to Penn Station operated 15 to 50 minutes late, the website said.

For current information on potential service delays, commuters are advised to consult the MTA website at mta.info.
