Trains running 'on or close to schedule' after rush hour delays, LIRR says
Trains are running "on or close to schedule" following a track condition in one of the East River tunnels that caused five-to 10-minute delays to Penn Station during rush hour Tuesday, the Long Island Rail Road reported.
The LIRR announced the delays in an alert to commuters at 5:19 a.m. and said the issue was being addressed by Amtrak, which owns and operates the tunnels.
An Amtrak spokesman said the issue was caused by a broken switch at the "J.O. Interlocking" location, which is just east of the station platforms, and that Amtrak crews were "making temporary welding repairs" until the switch could be replaced.
A speed restriction of 10 mph through the area was put in place as a result, the spokesman said. The normal restriction is 15 mph.
It was not immediately clear how many trains were affected.
