Service on the Port Jefferson branch of the LIRR late Tuesday was on or close to schedule after a train struck and killed a person earlier west of the Kings Park station, leading to delays, according to the MTA.

A Long Island Rail Road train heading east from the Hunterspoint Avenue station in Queens to Port Jefferson about 5:41 p.m. "struck a person who was not authorized to be on the tracks," an MTA spokesperson said in an email to Newsday late Tuesday.

The victim, who MTA police have not yet identified, was pronounced dead at the scene by members of the Kings Park Fire Department, according to the spokesperson. No other injuries were reported.

A preliminary investigation, "which included video review, reveals no criminality is suspected," the spokesperson said. The matter remains under investigation.

The collision caused several trains to temporarily wait at various stations east and west of Kings Park, according various alerts on the MTA’s website throughout the evening.

The train involved in the fatal strike carried about 500 passengers, according to the spokesperson. That train completed its route after a 79-minute delay.
