LIRR restores service on Oyster Bay line
Service was restored on the Oyster Bay branch of the Long Island Rail Road at about 8:15 a.m. Wednesday after a police investigation of a body found on the tracks suspended all service.
The body was identified later Monday as a 53-year-old man from Oyster Bay, an LIRR spokesman said. MTA police are investigating the incident as an apparent suicide, the spokesman said.
The railroad said an engineer of on an early morning train had reported a body on the tracks. Nassau County police said investigators were called to the scene and that it was not clear if the victim had been struck by an earlier train, had suffered a medical episode or had been the victim of a crime.
The victim was found on the railroad right of way near Bayside Avenue, just west of the Oyster Bay train station.
During the service suspension the railroad advised Oyster Bay branch customers to use other branches or seek alternate transportation. Bus service also was provided.
At about 8:15 a.m. the railroad said it would operate one extra westbound passenger train, followed by a scheduled westbound train at 8:16 a.m.
The first eastbound train, the 8:06 a.m. train from Jamaica, was due to arrive in Oyster Bay at 9:03 a.m., officials said.
