LIRR: Service from Atlantic Terminal to Jamaica restored
Day two of the LIRR’s planned service disruptions caused by the ongoing repairs at Penn Station brought more unplanned headaches for commuters, as signal problems caused the railroad to suspend service to and from Brooklyn early in the afternoon rush hour.
Shortly before 3 p.m., the LIRR alerted customers that it was shutting down service in both directions between Atlantic Terminal and Jamaica because of “signal trouble east of Atlantic Terminal.” By 4 p.m. — considered the beginning of the “peak” evening travel period by the LIRR — the railroad was recommending customers “travel to Penn for eastbound train service.”
That advice came despite the LIRR rerouting some of its usual Penn Station rush-hour trains to run instead out of Atlantic Terminal for the duration of Amtrak’s latest infrastructure renewal project at Penn, which began over the weekend and will last until May.
By 4:30 p.m., the railroad had restored eastbound service out of Atlantic Terminal, but delays and cancellations lingered well into the rush hour. Westbound service was restored just before 5:30 p.m. In total, the signal issue caused at least 11 trains to be canceled.
Earlier Tuesday, regular train service was restored between Ronkonkoma and Greenport, the Long Island Rail Road said.
The LIRR said in an alert about 6 a.m. that it had finished clearing snowdrifts on that stretch of track, which had been served by buses since Monday.
