A photo from the scene shows severe damage to the Franklin Avenue crossing gates.
The LIRR website said Monday that an extra passenger train departed Penn Station at 5:15 p.m. due in to Hempstead at 6:07 p.m. "to accommodate customers from an earlier suspension of service on the branch as a result of a vehicle accident at the Franklin Avenue crossing in Garden City."
