LIRR: Train that struck man in Westbury on the move again

The Long Island Rail Road train that struck a man in Westbury, causing widespread delays and cancellations for rush-hour commuters, is finally on the move, a railroad spokeswoman said.
LIRR spokeswoman Nancy Gamerman said the train, the 4:51 p.m. to Ronkonkoma out of Penn Station, left Westbury at 6:31 p.m., about an hour after hitting a man who was not authorized to be on the tracks.
The LIRR said trains are operating on time or close, with some residual delays, as of 8 p.m. The LIRR reported the crash to its customers shortly after 5:30 p.m.
“Customers can expect most delays and cancellations related to the Port Jefferson and Ronkonkoma branches,” the railroad said in a message sent to customers. “The LIRR recommends customers consider using alternate branches for eastbound service.”
Gamerman said the unidentified man “suffered severe trauma,” but survived and was transported to an area hospital.
“It’s an active investigation, so police are there. That’s causing the delay,” Gamerman said. “The delays could get worse as the rush progresses.”
