LIRR running extra trains, offering fare cut for Thanksgiving

Six westbound Long Island Rail Road trains will be added to its holiday service Thursday morning for people attending the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in Manhattan along with 11 additional eastbound trains departing Thursday afternoon.
Over the weekend, there will be four more westbound trains in the morning and six afternoon eastbound trains. The added weekend service will also be available through December, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority said in the release.
Off-peak ticket fares will be offered from Thanksgiving Day until Sunday, and children ages 5 to 11 can ride one-way for $1 each, according to the release. The off-peak fares will be in effect Friday even though trains will operate on a normal weekday schedule.
On Wednesday afternoon, the LIRR experienced delays and cancellations due to a faulty switch outside an East River tunnel. But the issue was resolved about 5:20 p.m., according to an Amtrak spokesman.
