LIRR: Signal problems during Friday morning, afternoon commutes

Long Island Rail Road service was operating on schedule Friday evening, hours after officials fixed an afternoon signal glitch at Jamaica that followed diversions and cancellations of morning trains due to an Amtrak signal problem in an East River tunnel.

“Signals were not displaying the correct information,” LIRR spokesman Aaron Donovan said, referring to a signal problem reported at 3:30 p.m. and resolved by 3:49 p.m.

The mishap caused delays of up to 23 minutes on the eastbound Ronkonkoma and Babylon lines, he added.

LIRR officials could provide no estimate of how long trains were delayed during the Friday morning snag, which affected service into Penn Station.

The spokesman could not say how many trains were affected, but the railroad had said on its website about 8 a.m. that 11 trains had been canceled, diverted or had their runs shortened. Updates minutes later said some of the trains the railroad had planned to terminate at Jamaica instead would make their normal run into Penn Station.
