LIRR: Train strikes car in North Bellport
The Long Island Rail Road said it suspended service on the Montauk Branch Wednesday morning after a train struck a car in North Bellport.
Police said the driver drove off after the accident.
It was not immediately clear if the driver was later stopped, Suffolk County police said.
Police said the Metropolitan Transportation Authority police were handling the investigation. The MTA could not immediately comment on the incident, which occurred at 5:09 a.m. near the Bellport station.
No one is believed to have been injured in the accident, police said.
Authorities said Montauk Highway was closed between North Dunton Avenue and Gazzola Drive for investigation.
The train that is believed to be involved in the accident is the 4:37 a.m. train from Speonk, which was scheduled to arrive in Babylon at 5:37 a.m. The railroad, in an alert to customers, said the train struck a vehicle "adjacent to the tracks."
