The Long Island Rail Road will offer extra train service for the U.S. Open golf tournament in Southampton later this month, officials announced Monday.

LIRR officials said they will double the amount of service they will provide to its temporary Shinnecock Hills station from when the weeklong tournament was last held at the Southampton golf club in 2018. Back then, more than 77,000 fans took the train to the tournament, according to the LIRR.

"The Long Island Rail Road is ready," LIRR President Rob Free said in a statement. "Avoid the traffic and use our exceptionally reliable service to and from Shinnecock Hills for all the golf action. Extra staff will also be on hand at Southampton to help customers throughout the championship for a great customer experience."

During the practice rounds in the first three days of the tournament Monday to Wednesday, June 15 to 17, the LIRR will run 22 trains serving Shinnecock Hills — twice as many as in 2018. Ten trains will arrive at the station, and 12 will depart.

During the championship rounds on Thursday and Friday, 25 trains will run to or from the station — 12 arriving and 13 departing.

On Saturday and Sunday, the LIRR will operate 26 trains serving the Shinnecock Hills station, including 13 arriving trains and 13 departing train, according to the LIRR.

The LIRR will also add cars to trains and adjust schedules "to provide additional rider capacity and more direct service options" to and from the golf club, according to the LIRR.
