Monday brings major schedule changes for Long Island Rail Road passengers during track work for expansion projects.

Beginning May 23, there will be shifts in both weekend and weekday timetables.

For instance, westbound Ronkonkoma Branch trains, as well as eastbound Oyster Bay trains, are to depart as many as 25 minutes later during weekday middays.

Some weekday trains are to be removed from the schedule, such as the 11:21 a.m. train to Penn Station from Farmingdale, as well as the 10:25 p.m. train to Huntington from Penn.

And on weekends, trains between Penn Station and Huntington are to run just once an hour, and just once every two hours to and from Port Jefferson.

Among the other changes: the 6:07 p.m. weekday train to Babylon from Penn is being restored, and a new 7:37 a.m. train to Brooklyn’s Atlantic Terminal from Jamaica is being added.

The service changes allow the completion, by December, of construction for a 10-mile-long third track between Floral Park and Hicksville. Also made possible by the changes: capacity improvements at Jamaica.

Additionally, summer-only trains are to return for Memorial Day weekend.
