A man was struck and killed by a Long Island Rail Road train on the tracks near the Syosset station shortly before 1 p.m. Saturday, Metropolitan Transportation Authority spokeswoman Marjorie Anders said.

The railroad suspended service for three hours in both directions on the Port Jefferson line from Hicksville to Huntington, and buses ran between the stations while the incident was being investigated.

Service was restored at 4 p.m.

Commuters on the train that hit the man, whose identity has not been released, were stuck on the train for about an hour until they could be transferred to another train, Anders said.

The death was likely a suicide, she said.

A Nassau County police spokeswoman said the Jericho incident occurred at 12:49 p.m. at Robbins Lane.
