Montauk branch service restored after train hits person, LIRR says

Service has been restored on the Long Island Rail Road's Montauk branch after it was partly suspended Thursday morning because a person was hit by a train, the railroad tweeted.

Customers had been told to expect "residual delays" of up to 40 minutes, but the railroad tweeted at 8:35 a.m. that the branch was operating "on or close to schedule."

The person, who was on the tracks, was hit west of Sayville. Service had been suspended between Babylon and Patchogue, the railroad said.

At least 59 people have been struck by LIRR trains in the past five years, according to statistics from the Federal Railroad Administration.
