State Route 111 southbound in Smithtown reopened after sinkhole repairs

State and local crews repaired a sinkhole that appeared on a roadway cutting through a commercial and residential Smithtown area.
The southbound side of State Route 111 near Maple Avenue was reopened early Thursday since being closed Wednesday afternoon after "an apparent water main break" caused a sinkhole, the New York State Department of Transportation said in a news release.
Southbound motorists on State Route 111 were forced to turn east onto Cross Street, south onto Plaisted Avenue and west onto State Route 347 to finally arrive back on State Route 111 south of the road work.
State transportation crews, along with others from the Suffolk County Water Authority and Town of Smithtown, worked to repair the water main and roadway through the evening Wednesday. They reopened the southbound side at 2:30 a.m. Thursday, officials said.
