Sunrise Highway lanes close for repairs in Bay Shore, DOT says
Off-peak midday lane closures of Sunrise Highway in Bay Shore are under way for repairs on the Fifth Avenue Bridge, the state Department of Transportation said.
Sunrise Highway, or Route 27, will be closed in each direction during the workweek throughout the year for a repair project that ensures the longevity of the aging bridge and maintains the safety of motorists, the agency said in a news release.
Single-lane closures began Thursday for the installation of protective, temporary concrete barriers to enable bridge repair work.
The off-peak closures in both directions will be in effect from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, between Richland Boulevard and Second Avenue, the agency said.
One out of three lanes will be closed on the mainline, and one lane out of two will be closed on the service roads when needed.
The closures are expected to be in effect until the end of 2016, the agency said.
