If you live on Long Island, you’re used to backed-up traffic and delayed trains. Especially when going to and from work.
Long Islanders know trips that elsewhere might be minutes can unfurl into hours in Nassau and Suffolk counties.
No surprise then that Long Island has the second-longest commute in minutes nationwide, according to a study by Trulia, an online real estate service.
Averaging 33.0 minutes, Long Island’s commute time is second to New York City’s 34.7 minutes, Trulia said.
Trulia said its commute conclusions are based on the census’ 2014 American Community Survey data on commuting habits and an online Harris Poll survey of 2,000 Americans conducted in November.
Overall, it studied the 50 largest U.S. metro areas, finding that commute times have risen steadily, up to an average of 27.2 minutes in 2014 from 26.4 minutes in 2009.
The study also says that over the past decade there’s been an increase in people who rent. And those renters are far more likely to live closer to work, take public transportation and have shorter commute times than their home-owning counterparts, Trulia says.
In the 10 metro areas with the longest commute times overall, eight of them had shorter times for renters compared with homeowners, the study says.
Long Island was among the eight, with average commute time of 29.3 minutes for renters to 32.8 minutes for homeowners.
In New York City, renters and homeowners had the same average commute time, 34.8 minutes.
The top 10 for longest commute times also included, in order: Washington, D.C.; Newark; Chicago; Boston; Oakland, California; Riverside/San Bernardino, California; Baltimore; and Atlanta.
