Twitter users can log in again; site was down for hours due to technical problems

Twitter users were unable to log into the popular social media network for several hours early Tuesday in what appeared to be a global shutdown.
“Something is technically wrong,” was posted at twitter.com. “Thanks for noticing — we are going to fix it up and have things back to normal soon.”
The network was back up sometime around 8:30 a.m., but as early as 4 a.m., at twitterstatus.tumblr.com, it acknowledged some users were having problems accessing Twitter and that it was working toward a solution.
The New York Times reported that some 300 million users worldwide were unable to access the network.
