Two early morning house fires in a four-hour span in Nassau County on Tuesday left one resident injured and 13 people displaced from their homes, Nassau fire officials said.
Nassau County Assistant Chief Fire Marshal James F. Hickman said the first fire, at a house on White Oak Tree Road in Laurel Hollow, was reported at 12:43 a.m. Firefighters from the Syosset Fire Department found an attached garage and the first floor of the two-story house "well involved," he said.
About 75 firefighters from eight departments battled the blaze, Hickman said in a statement, bringing the fire under control in about 30 minutes. Three residents were displaced by the fire, Hickman said. One person suffered minor burns to his hands and was treated at the scene.
The second fire, at a multifamily home on Yale Street in Hempstead, was reported at 4:43 a.m., with about 75 firefighters from Garden City and seven other departments arriving to find what Hickman described as "a heavily involved fire on all floors" of the private residence.
It took firefighters about an hour to bring that blaze under control, Hickman said. Although no injuries were reported, the fire displaced 10 residents — seven adults and three children — with the Red Cross being notified to assist in finding them temporary shelter, he added.
The causes of both fires remain under investigation by the fire marshal's office and detectives from the Nassau Police Arson / Bomb Squad, Hickman said.
