Two hurt in boat crash off Gilgo Beach

Two people were injured when two boats collided Sunday in the state boat channel near Hemlock Cove off Gilgo Beach, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

The injuries were not serious. One of the boats sank immediately following the accident, but was later salvaged, the Coast Guard said.

A Coast Guard spokeswoman, Petty Officer 2nd Class Jetta Disco, said the accident involved a 21-foot Wellcraft and a 20-foot Mako. Each vessel had two people aboard.

A Coast Guard response crew from Station Fire Island was dispatched to the scene after a Good Samaritan placed a distress call. A Suffolk County police Marine Bureau crew also responded to the scene.

Officials said that the Mako began to sink following the collision, which occurred about 5:30 p.m. The two people aboard the Mako were transferred from that vessel by the Good Samaritan and were given first aid until they could be taken to a hospital, the Coast Guard said.

None of those involved were identified by authorities.

The conditions of the injured was not known Monday.

Suffolk marine police are investigating the crash, according to the Coast Guard.
