Upstate crash kills two Long Islanders and a Brooklyn man returning from a religious retreat

Two Long Islanders and a Brooklyn man were killed and four others injured when their van ran a stop sign and was hit by a tractor-trailer Sunday in Ulster County, State Police said.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was also injured, police said.

Ricadeau Anantua, 33, of Freeport, Garry Edouard, 48, of Wyandanch, and Miguel St. Louis, 17, of Brooklyn, were killed when the tractor-trailer hit their van about 10:30 a.m. at the intersection of Route 209 and Nevele Drive in Ellenville, authorities said.

Four others in the van -- Mario Estiverne Sr., 49, his son Mario Estiverne Jr., 16, both of Elmont, and Ariel Regis, 35, and driver Guepson Gue, 61, both of Brooklyn -- were injured, State Police said.

All are members of a Seventh-day Adventist church in Brooklyn and were returning from a religious retreat at the Honors Haven Resort and Spa in Ellenville at the time of the crash.

The van attempted to enter Route 209 from Nevele Drive after Gue failed to stop at a stop sign, according to a police statement. The van was hit on its passenger side by the tractor-trailer traveling on Route 209.

Gue and Estiverne Sr. were airlifted to Westchester Medical Center for treatment where they were in critical but stable condition, police said.

Regis, Estiverne Jr. and the driver of the tractor-trailer, Tampie Adams, 37, of Randleman, North Carolina, were taken by ambulance to Ellenville Hospital for treatment of minor injuries, police said.

Police said their initial investigation found that neither drugs nor alcohol played a role in the accident. No criminal charges have been filed.

The accident remains under investigation by State Police, who were assisted at the accident scene by Village of Ellenville police and the Ulster County sheriff.
