Voting Tuesday for fire commissioners

Voters in more than 120 fire districts across Long Island go to the polls Tuesday to select commissioners who collectively control more than $320 million in spending and set tax levies.

The districts are independent public taxing agencies and their commissioners collect no salaries. The commissioners are responsible for drafting district budgets, determining fire protection policies and buying equipment.

The districts raise operating funds mostly through property taxes.

Residents in Tuesday's elections do not vote for budgets as they do in school district elections; fire district budgets were adopted by the boards of commissioners last month.

Following a 2005 Newsday series that revealed excessive and unaccountable spending by some fire districts, state laws were enacted mandating more transparency in district operations, including having all districts hold elections on the second Tuesday in December. A handful of barrier beach districts in Suffolk -- Ocean Bay Park, Davis Park, Cherry Grove and Fire Island Pines -- were allowed to hold elections in July.

Nearly half of the district commissioner seats up for grabs are contested, with more than 270 candidates running.

Following is district-by-district information about budgets adopted by commissioners for 2012, the names of candidates running and polling times for Suffolk County districts. Information on Nassau County districts appeared in Friday's Newsday.

AMAGANSETT

Amagansett adopted a $1.28 million budget, a 26 percent increase over this year, largely due to the first bond payment for land acquisition approved by voters last year. Incumbent J. Kent Howie is running unopposed. Polls are open from 6 to 9 p.m.

BAY SHORE

Bay Shore adopted a budget of $2.46 million, a 3.4 percent increase over the current budget. Incumbents William Murray and Gregory Nardone are not contested for two seats. Voting is from 3 to 9 p.m.

BAYPORT

Bayport adopted a budget of $1.97 million, a 1.8 percent increase over the current budget. Connie Haab is running unopposed. Polls are open from 6 to 9 p.m.

BELLPORTBellport adopted a $1.27 million budget, a 4.5 percent decrease from the current year. Incumbent Rich Terwilliger is unopposed. Voting is from 6 to 9 p.m.

BLUE POINT

Blue Point adopted a $948,013 budget, a 1.2 percent decrease from the current year. Commissioner Peter Miller is unopposed. Voting is from 6 to 9 p.m.

BOHEMIA

Bohemia adopted a budget of $2.33 million, a 1.7 percent increase over the current budget. Glenn Ostermann and Gregg Burzine are running for one commissioner seat. Voting is from 3 to 9 p.m.

BRENTWOOD

Brentwood adopted a budget of $6.61 million, an 11.9 percent increase over the current budget. Thomas Waldron and Eric Raudies are running for one seat. Polls are open from 1 to 9 p.m.

BRIDGEHAMPTON

Bridgehampton adopted a $1.47 million budget, a 0.2 percent increase over the current year. Raymond Topping Jr. and Bruce Dombkowski are running for the seat of Clifford Foster, who is retiring. Treasurer Charles Butler Jr. is unopposed. Voting is 6 to 9 p.m.

BROOKHAVEN

Brookhaven adopted a $2.47 million budget, a 2.3 percent increase from the current year. Incumbent Michael J. Verni is unopposed. Voting is from 6 to 9 p.m.

CENTER MORICHES

Center Moriches adopted a $1.87 million budget, a 1.4 percent increase from the current year. Paul Colon is running unopposed. Voting is 5 to 9 p.m.

CENTEREACH

Centereach adopted a $4.36 million budget, a 2 percent increase from the current year. Incumbent Frank Rudilosso is facing Henry Borkowski. Voting is from 2 to 9 p.m.

CENTERPORT

Centerport adopted a $1.72 million budget, a 1.7 percent increase from the current year. Incumbent Peter Gunther is running unopposed. Polls are open from 3 to 9 p.m.

CENTRAL ISLIP

Central Islip adopted a budget of $3.32 million, a 2.1 percent increase over the current budget. Incumbent James Sodergren is not contested. Voting is from 6 to 9 p.m.

COLD SPRING HARBOR

Cold Spring Harbor adopted a $1.5 million budget, a 2 percent increase from the current year. John Parker is running unopposed. Polls are open from 3 to 9 p.m.

COMMACK

Commack adopted a $4 million budget, a 3.2 percent increase from the current year. Incumbent Jeremiah O'Sullivan is being challenged by Mary Ryan, Edward Monahan and John Engberg for one seat. Polls are open from 3 to 9 p.m.

COPIAGUE

Copiague adopted a $3.26 million budget, the same amount as this year's budget. Incumbent Peter Sayvich is running unopposed. Polls are open 6 to 9 p.m.

CORAM

Coram adopted a $5.43 million budget, a $2,847 increase from the current year. Incumbent Jerome Dellibovi is unopposed. Voting is from 3 to 9 p.m.

CUTCHOGUE

Cutchogue adopted a $1.25 million budget, a 4 percent increase over the current year. Joseph S. Zuhoski Jr. is unopposed. Voting is from 6 to 9 p.m.

DEER PARK

Deer Park adopted a $3 million budget, a 1.9 percent decrease from the current year. Incumbent commissioner Peter Granelle is running unopposed. Polls are open 6 to 9 p.m.

DIX HILLS

Dix Hills adopted a $4.68 million budget, a 4.8 percent increase from the current year. Robert Commiso and Robert Adcock are running for one four-year term. Polls are open from 4 to 9 p.m.

DUNEWOOD

Dunewood adopted an $83,000 budget, a 7.8 percent increase over the current year. Dunewood did not return calls for information on candidates, voting times or propositions, if any, on the ballot.

EAST BRENTWOOD

East Brentwood adopted a budget of $1.07 million, a 13.2 percent increase over the current budget. Incumbent Edward J. Tully Jr. is running against Eric Vasquez. Polls are open 6 to 9 p.m.

EAST ISLIP

East Islip adopted a budget of $2.42 million, a 1.8 percent increase over the current budget. Incumbent Thomas Drywa and Julio Nieves are running for one seat. Voting is from 3 to 9 p.m.

EAST MARION

East Marion adopted a $579,496 budget, a 4 percent increase over this year. Commissioner William Bertodatti is unopposed. Voting is from 6 to 9 p.m.

EAST MORICHES

East Moriches approved an $805,960 budget, a 1.9 percent decrease from the current year. Michael J. Mazarakis is opposed by Paul R. Haines for one seat. Voting is from 3 to 9 p.m.

EAST NORTHPORT

East Northport adopted a $3.68 million budget, a 2.4 percent increase from the current year. Incumbent Charles Warringer is being challenged by Wayne Kaifler Sr. Polls are open from 3 to 9 p.m.

EAST QUOGUE

East Quogue adopted a $1.19 million budget, a 2 percent increase over this year. Commissioner Allyn Jackson is unopposed. Voting is from 5:30 to 9 p.m.

EASTPORT

Eastport approved a $956,675 budget, a 1 percent decrease from the current year. Incumbent Paul Massey is running unopposed. Polls are open from 6 to 9 p.m.

EATONS NECK

Eatons Neck adopted a $572,557 budget, a 14 percent increase from the current year. Commissioner Brian Gorman is unopposed. Voting is from 6 to 9 p.m. at the firehouse.

FAIR HARBOR

Fair Harbor adopted a $395,440 budget, which includes the consolidation of the Lonelyville fire district into Fair Harbor; last year's Fair Harbor budget was $247,793. Incumbents Brett Roberts, Julie Lokin, Heather McDonald, Larry Goldstein and Kate Skelly are running unopposed. Polls are open from 6 to 9 p.m.

FARMINGVILLE

Farmingville adopted a $2.98 million budget, a 0.7 percent increase from the current year. Incumbent Robert W. Wallace is being challenged by John K. Skippon for one seat. Polls are open from 3 to 9 p.m.

FISHERS ISLAND

Fishers Island adopted a $394,200 budget, a 10 percent increase over last year. Commissioner Jeffrey Edwards will face challenger Sara McLean for a five-year term. Paul Giles is unopposed for an unfilled three-year term. Voting is from 6 to 9 p.m.

FLANDERS

Flanders adopted a $661,450 budget, an 8 percent increase over the current year. Chairman Brian Williams is unopposed. Voting will be from 6 to 9 p.m.

GORDON HEIGHTS

Gordon Heights adopted a $1.27 million budget, an 11.1 percent decrease from the current year. Commissioner Avery Dean is being challenged for one seat by Joyce Bourne. Voting is from 3 to 9 p.m.

GREAT RIVER

Great River adopted a budget of $302,320, a 1.2 percent decrease from the current budget. Incumbent Ron Gibbons is running unopposed. Voting is from 6 to 9 p.m.

GREENLAWN

Greenlawn adopted a $2.48 million budget, a 2.0 percent increase from the current year. Incumbent Doug Tewksbury is running unopposed; Francis DeMayo is running unopposed to complete the last two years of a term vacated by the death of Commissioner Mark Levee. Polls are open from 6 to 9 p.m.

HAGERMAN

Hagerman adopted a $2.41 million budget, a 2 percent increase from the current year. Incumbent Joseph Gonnelly is running unopposed. Polls are open from 5 to 9 p.m.

HALESITE

Halesite adopted a $1.5 million budget, a 2 percent increase from the current year. Vincent Capobianco is running unopposed for a five-year term, and Craig Lanigan and Donald Tesoriero are running for an unexpired three-year term. Polls are open from 6 to 9 p.m.

HAMPTON BAYS

Hampton Bays adopted a $2.83 million budget, a 10.2 percent decrease from the current year's budget. Commissioner Robert King is unopposed. Voting is from 6 to 9 p.m.

HAUPPAUGE

Hauppauge adopted a budget of $3.48 million, a 3.6 percent decrease from the current year. Incumbent Edward J. Crean Jr. is not contested. Voting is from 2 to 9 p.m.

HOLBROOK

Holbrook adopted a budget of $3.39 million, a 1.8 percent increase over the current budget. Joseph F. Williams and Michael Tarantino are running for one seat. Polls are open from 3 to 9 p.m.

HOLTSVILLE

Holtsville adopted a $2.27 million budget, a $967 decrease from the current year. Incumbent Tom Pesinkowski is running unopposed for a five-year term. John Skalocky and Ronald Rizzo are vying to fill one year remaining on the term of a vacant seat. Polls are open from 6 to 9 p.m.

HUNTINGTON

Huntington adopted a $2.68 million budget, a 3 percent increase from the current year. Incumbent Thomas Collins is running for a five-year term. There is one proposition on the ballot that seeks to sell a tower ladder. Polling is from 3 to 9 p.m.

HUNTINGTON MANOR

Huntington Manor adopted a $4.92 million budget, a 0.1 percent decrease from the current year. Bedel Saget, Ronald Schankin and Raymond Spatafora are running for one seat. Polls are open from 3 to 9 p.m.

ISLIP

Islip adopted a budget of $3 million, a $487 decrease from the current budget. Phillip J. Dineen is running against Michael Leo. Polls are open from 3 to 9 p.m.

ISLIP TERRACE

Islip Terrace adopted a $2.3 million budget, the same as the current year's. Anthony M. Chiafalo is running unopposed. Polls open from 3 to 9 p.m.

JAMESPORT

Jamesport adopted a $799,692 budget, a 2 percent increase over the current year. Commissioner Thomas Brady is unopposed for a five-year term. Leroy Anthony and John J. Apicello are running for a four-year term. Voting is 3 to 9 p.m.

KINGS PARK

Kings Park adopted a $2.82 million budget, a 2 percent increase over the current year. Andrew Menzies, Thomas Richardson and Louis Varrialle are running for one seat. Voting is from 3 to 9 p.m.

KISMET

Kismet adopted a $148,404 budget, a 4.5 percent increase over the current budget. Commissioner Samuel Wood is running unopposed for a five-year term. Incumbent Gary Leone is running unopposed for a one-year term after being appointed to fill the term of a commissioner who died in office. Polls are open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

LAKE RONKONKOMA

Lake Ronkonkoma adopted a $2.95 million budget, a 12.7 percent increase from the current year. J. Carter Biggs and Michael Partridge are running for one seat. There is one proposition on the ballot to approve $1,000,000 in bonds to fund the purchase of pumper firefighting vehicles. Polls are open from 5 to 9 p.m.

LAKELAND

Lakeland adopted a $2.73 million budget, a 1.7 percent increase from the current year. Incumbent Anthony M. DiFilippo is running unopposed. Polls are open from noon to 9 p.m.

MANORVILLE

Manorville adopted a $1.63 million budget, a 1.4 percent decrease from the current year. Incumbent Joseph Danowski Jr. is being challenged by Thomas J. Campanaro for one seat. Polls are open from 3 to 9 p.m.

MASTIC

Mastic adopted a $1.74 million budget that is the same amount as the current year. Incumbent Daniel Haase is running unopposed. Polls are open from 5 to 9 p.m.

MASTIC BEACH

Mastic Beach adopted a $1.31 million budget, a 0.8 percent increase from the current year. Incumbent Charles L. O'Connor is running unopposed. Polls are open from noon to 9 p.m.

SPRINGS

Terryville adopted a $4.58 million budget, a 4 percent increase from the current year. Incumbent Salvatore Garafalo is running unopposed. Polls are open from 2 to 9 p.m.

Yaphank adopted a $1.89 million budget, a 4.5 percent increase from the current year. Incumbent Donald Schaff is running unopposed. Polls are open from 3 to 7 p.m.
