World War II veteran Irving Greger, left, in May of 1945. Assigned as a tank commander, he was so green that he was put under the command of a more seasoned sergeant for his first weeks in combat. Later after taking command of a tank platoon, he said he lost tanks and men in battle.

Seventy years ago, the world was engaged in the final battles of World War II, with fighting hitting a fever pitch in both the European and Pacific theaters.

Among those troops were Long Islanders, on the ground, in the air and on the oceans. 

One Farmingdale veteran remains haunted by the death of his friend in Iwo Jima.

Another Freeport veteran remembers dreaming of chocolate while locked up in a German prisoner-of-war camp. Each serviceman and woman has a story to tell -- one that has helped shape his or her life.
