There will be major service disruptions on the LIRR's Babylon branch this weekend because of a project to upgrade the line's switching and signal system.

Buses replace trains between Freeport and Babylon from 4 a.m. Saturday until 10 p.m. Sunday. Long Island Rail Road officials advise customers to allow an extra 30 minutes of travel time.

To avoid buses, LIRR officials advise customers to use alternate branches, including the LIRR's Ronkonkoma line.

The LIRR will conduct more than 400 tests this weekend for a new microprocessor-based switching and signal system between Wantagh and Amityville.
