Last weekend's perfect weather is officially over.
A cold front from Canada rolled in Sunday afternoon, bringing with it scattered light rain on Long Island and in New York City, and temperatures in the low 60s, the National Weather Service said Sunday.
The precipitation was expected to fall overnight and into Monday morning, amounting to less than 1/10th of an inch, said weather service meteorologist John Murray. The low at Islip for Sunday night was expected to be 59 degrees.
Heavier showers could develop on Monday after 3 p.m. and into the evening, when isolated thunderstorms are expected over the region as part of another cold front rolling in from the northwest, Murray said.
"The next front is going to be a little stronger," Murray said.
That weather system is supposed to send temperatures slightly below normal for Wednesday and Thursday, with highs in the low 70s, Murray said. Another cold front sweeping in with a high pressure system from the Ohio Valley could bring more rain at the end of the week, he said.
Lest there be any doubt we've transitioned from shorts and flip-flops to sweater weather, weather service meteorologist Gary Conte said: "We're well past the meteorological summer peak. By and large, the heat is behind us."
