On Monday in Sound Beach, Long Island Home Builders Care, the charity of the Long Island Builders Institute, will break ground for a home that a veteran will be able to buy for about $100,000.

It will be affordable because an institute member, Mark Baisch of Landmark Properties of Suffolk, donated the land, and others are donating labor. VFW Post 6249 in Rocky Point screened applicants for this home and chose Staff Sgt. Omar Domenech, a wounded Army veteran of multiple tours in Iraq and Kuwait, who now lives in Brooklyn with his wife and two children.

With land to be provided by Suffolk County and the Town of Brookhaven, more houses are planned. Other municipalities should join in, too. It's tough to imagine a better way for builders to help than by building an affordable future for veterans. hN
