That's the number of hours Americans spend each year preparing their taxes, according to Nina E. Olson, the Internal Revenue Service's national tax advocate. With tax season beginning, Olson stated in a report to Congress on Wednesday that, "If tax compliance were an industry, it would be one of the largest in the United States." She said the "tax industry" requires the equivalent of about 3 million full-time workers. Her point: The code is too complex and encourages cheating, and it needs to be reformed and rewritten.
