Don't hide targeted precincts

Nassau County Police Department patch Credit: Handout
On Wednesday, the Nassau County Legislature is scheduled to hear Edward Mangano's proposal to close two police precincts in 2012. The county executive is claiming the move will save or generate $8 million by laying off 70 administrative employees and selling the closed properties.
The meeting should be a heated one. While the idea of the closures has been well-publicized, which two precincts are slated to be shuttered has not. The county, which has an unfortunate history of putting out a broad plan but holding back the details until later, should be sure to make the specifics of the police department consolidation, and all the rest of the budget's fine print, known this week -- well before Election Day -- so voters will know exactly where their legislators stand.
