Rob Astorino would give Andrew Cuomo a run for his money in the 2014 governor's race, according to New York State Republican Party Chairman Edward Cox.
In a meeting with Newsday's editorial board on Monday, Cox said that the Westchester County executive was extremely positive about the possibility of challenging Cuomo in the fall.
Cox recently set up a meeting between Astorino and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie at the Republican Governors Association convention in Phoenix. During an hour-long conversation, the two men talked about balancing politics and family.
"I didn't get any details of the meeting, I didn't need to," said Cox. "They were very positive afterwards."
Cox told the editorial board that Astorino's meeting with Christie was "very helpful [for] encouraging Rob to run."
