That's roughly the number of lightbulbs powered in America by material that was once in Soviet nuclear weapons. The example is offered by the federal National Nuclear Security Administration, which says nearly half of all electricity generated in commercial U.S. nuclear reactors comes from former Soviet weapons. To find uses for Russia's excess highly enriched uranium - and keep it away from those who would use it to harm others - the United States has been buying the fuel since 1993. The NNSA calls the effort "the ultimate swords to plowshares program.''
