That's the number of people killed in traffic accidents nationwide in 2010 -- the fewest in 60 years. It's still a sobering body count. But 1.09 deaths per 100 million miles traveled last year marks real progress compared with 7.13 in 1949. Credit for the improvement goes to a combination of factors: seat belts, air bags, anti-lock brakes, safer highways, and tougher drunken-driving laws more strictly enforced.
