That's the percentage of Long Islanders who, in the past 12 months, contacted a national, state or local government official to make their views known on an issue important to them, according to a poll by Newsday and Hofstra University. It's 10 percentage points higher than anywhere else in the state. The poll found that Long Islanders were also more likely than other New Yorkers to volunteer in a political campaign or take part in a charity fundraising walk or run.
