Of the total debt the United States has incurred since its founding, that's the portion that was borrowed just in the last 10 years, according to the U.S. Treasury. On Oct. 1, the federal debt was $13.5 trillion. On Oct. 1, 2000, it was $5.5 trillion. And in 1980, the national debt was just $900 billion, meaning we incurred about 7 percent of our debt in our first two centuries as a nation and 93 percent of our national IOUs over the last 30.
