Editorial Quick Hit: Kessel's check book
Richard Kessel apparently just can't say no.
The New York Power Authority chief -- and durable Long Island political player -- has been told by state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman not to give NYPA funds to charities unrelated to the agency's core mission.
While it's unclear how much of NYPA's giving has been extracurricular, Schneiderman cited donations to chambers of commerce unrelated to NYPA -- like the one in Merrick, Kessel's hometown, which got $4,750, and the one for the Bellmores, which got $4,800, both in 2009. Kessel should know better, since he ran the same candy store, with the same result, when he led the Long Island Power Authority. In 2007 such donations of LIPA funds brought an opinion from then-Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo, who said cut it out.
C'mon, Richie. Next time, write a personal check.
