Editorial: Speak up about bus cuts

Now that Nassau County has private bus service, it's not surprising that the operator would act quickly to eliminate money-losing routes -- but not so quickly that the changes would escape review by a legislative oversight committee. Since the five-member advisory panel is not yet in place, public hearings this week in Uniondale and Great Neck might be the best opportunity for riders to get information and raise questions about service reductions slated for April.
Before Veolia Transportation signed its contract in December, the company said it would cut service on some of the 48 lines it inherited from the MTA. Eliminating buses with low ridership makes sense, and Veolia should make its case for which routes need to be trimmed. And the legislature should put the advisory panel in place, so it can assure riders that wise choices were made.
