Conduct all school votes on one day a year

Two local school districts hold bond votes on Tuesday. Shoreham-Wading River and West Babylon will join at least six other Long Island districts that have asked voters to weigh in on big bond proposals in the last two months.

That's wrong. Not because the proposals are bad or too big. The issue is the timing of the vote.

Holding bond votes at such times as the dead of winter is blatantly disrespectful to taxpayers, who are not paying attention but still must foot the bill. State law mandates that residents vote on school budgets on the third Tuesday in May. The law should be amended to mandate votes on bonds on that day, too.

Districts that plan to ask twice for money should do it all at once so taxpayers know exactly how much they're being asked to pay. That's only fair.
