660 percent -- That's how many more assets the median upper-income American family had in 2013 than the median middle-income family -- the widest wealth gap between these groups in the 30 years the data have been collected.

The median high-income family had assets of $639,400, while the median middle-income family had $96,500. The wealth of upper-income families has doubled since 1983, but middle-income families have seen a rise of just 2 percent. Lower-income family wealth, at $9,300, sank more than 20 percent. It's a troubling trend.
