The 11th District covers the South Shore from Islip to West Babylon including Fire Island and North Babylon.

Steven J. Flotteron jokingly says he never imagined he’d become “the king of aquifer issues.”

But as the legislature’s deputy presiding officer, Flotteron’s advocacy for water quality concerns, particularly related to the Great South Bay, keeps the legislature focused on the issue. The Brightwaters Republican has worked to bring together elected officials and advocates “to speak in one voice” on how to address Fire Island’s wastewater management needs. Next up: a feasibility study to assess cost and next steps.

As chairman of budget and finance, Flotteron, 63, emphasizes Suffolk’s fiscal progress, pointing to four bond upgrades. He also smartly suggests further diversifying Suffolk’s housing stock, by adding cooperatives or condominiums to provide more affordable alternatives.

The legislature benefits from Flotteron’s moderating voice, and his thoughtful, studious approach to Suffolk’s most significant concerns. In his next term, he should see the Fire Island effort and other projects through, while keeping the county’s finances on track.

Democrat Lucas E. Deitch is not actively campaigning.

Newsday Opinion endorses Flotteron.
