The 13th District includes Salisbury, East Meadow and parts of Levittown.
East Meadow Republican Thomas McKevitt, 54, the deputy presiding officer in the GOP majority, is running for his fifth consecutive term.
He's known for working local issues energetically and paying close attention to his district on matters ranging widely from bike safety to emergency response in hurricanes and the pandemic. He brings a rare independent streak to his caucus. As the editorial board noted two years ago, McKevitt listens to feedback from his constituents to govern and get results. He served in the Assembly from 2006-2017.
His reelection campaign pitch this year continues to include holding the line on taxes and continuing to beef up police operations. McKevitt did not meet with the editorial board.
His Democratic opponent, Clive A. Cossou, is not actively campaigning.
Newsday Opinion endorses McKevitt.
