Letter: Affirmative action in NCC search a mistake

Richard Newman, spokesman for the Nassau Community College Federation of Teachers, said the union looks forward to a full, affirmative-action search for a new president. ["NCC picks acting president," News, Nov. 22].
Newman obviously does not want the “best” person for the job, but an affirmative-action search. Newman personifies what is wrong with higher education. Instead of seeking the best person, he wants to find almost-best. The students of NCC deserve the very best, not almost best. Newman should resign his position in favor of an affirmative-action picked English professor.
