In the early morning hours of Saturday, July 18, 2015 there is a line to get into The Memory Motel Bar in Montauk. The village is considering asking bar owners and managers to count patrons. Credit: Doug Kuntz

I was in Montauk the weekend after the Fourth of July with my sister and her children. I was in shock over the massive crowds of 20-something hipsters that overran the town and businesses in various states of impairment and outright obnoxious behavior.

I've vacationed in Montauk for 30-plus years and cried over the condition of the pristine family-oriented town. It has been bad the last few years but this progressed to a state of chaos.

I'm pleased that returning one month later for a week's stay was like night and day! Police efforts are working. It's still crowded, but orderly with police presence everywhere.

Businesses may suffer a brief fallout, but to reclaim order and peace, rules have to be followed by all.
