I read with interest about the use of contraceptives as a deer management solution [“Deer birth control plan OKd,” News, Nov. 10].

I was chairwoman of the deer management committee in the Village of North Haven in the late 1990s. I introduced contraception as a solution and was advised by the state Department of Environmental Conservation that it could affect the venison caught and eaten by hunters.

Treated deer are supposed to be tagged with a notice telling hunters that the animal has been dosed. The notice gives hunters a number to call to check the suitability of the meat for consumption.
