Career orientation programs a must

The editorial depicting youth as the striking common trait regarding the arrests of three individuals this month in connection with threats against synagogues or Jewish people is incomplete [“Young men on a dark road,” Editorial, Nov.  22].

Besides youth, the three individuals are indicative of scores of aimless andfloundering youngsters without direction or career goals, clutching onto just about anything to express frustration and anger and to get attention.

By the time youngsters reach their late teens, vast numbers of exciting career opportunities in all fields, aligning with their key abilities and talents, should be crystal clear. Career orientation programs in secondary schools must be one of our national and global priorities.

We don’t need housing at mall

Brookhaven does not need more housing [“Add housing at the mall,” Editorial, Nov.  16]. Do any members of the editorial board live in the Town of Brookhaven or even Suffolk County?

Every time I find myself on Routes 25 and 112, I see swatches of open land where only days or weeks before stood mighty pines and oaks, now cleared for yet another housing development or a senior living facility. Along with this is the ever-increasing traffic in Brookhaven Town and Suffolk. The traffic congestion on our east-west and north-south roads (Route 112, Nichols Road, William Floyd Parkway) is out of control and getting worse daily.

The board wrote the editorial as if housing should be a mandatory part of a mall. It is not now nor has it ever been. If you’ve lived on Long Island, as I have for more than 50 years, you understand.

I’m totally in favor of new shops being added to the sad and mostly vacant Sun Vet Mall in Holbrook, but I am 1,000% against putting apartments and houses there.

Touching tribute not just small ‘Peanuts’

What a wonderful way to honor “Peanuts” creator Charles M. Schulz’s 100th birthday as several cartoonists tipped their pens to him in Saturday’s exploreLI [“Cartoon strips to honor ‘Peanuts’ creator,” flash!, Nov. 25].

The comics have never been so touching. Thanks to all the comic artists who honored his work.
