Musings: New technology has its limits

Congratulations to Sewanhaka High School for having a weekly “Tech Free Tuesday.” Many of today’s students want and need to be free from their cellphones, computers and social media, and it’s nice that this high school district is listening to its students and giving them what they’re looking for.
As a skills educator and social life skills coach, when I visit schools to present and demonstrate skills required to engage and connect with other humans face to face, they say “thank you” for letting them know how important these skills are and how they help them. I wish the term “old school” wasn’t used in a recent headline because the word “old” connotes something that some students could see as not important.
When I tell students that becoming old is what they all strive to do in life, they understand what I’m saying. All schools should follow Sewanhaka’s lead and give their students a “tech free” day at least once a week.
