Diversity, polarization and college debt

We've waited long enough for this justice
This proud and shining nation has so many stellar chapters in our history. We inspire people from all over the world.
But it seems to me that a reader chose to forget that our nation’s history also includes slavery, the Civil War, lynching, redlining and the use of attack dogs, not to mention the numerous episodes of mistreatment of Native Americans and immigrants “Focus on diversity polarizes country,” Letters, March 24].
Our country has always been polarized to some degree. There’s always been a “them” and an “us.” I think it’s in our genes. But what does it say of our character if we intentionally ignore the record of these less than illustrious occurrences?
From the appointment of the first Supreme Court justices in 1790 until the appointment of Thurgood Marshall in 1967, a nominee to the Supreme Court was a white male. That’s 177 years of needing to be white before you could be nominated for a seat on the Supreme Court. It took another 14 years before a nominee could be a white female.
After those long waits, I don’t have a problem with someone finally saying that this time you need to be a Black woman.

Pick schools wisely to avoid big loans
It is more than tiresome to hear the consistent drumbeat regarding student loan forgiveness [“Eye on loan forgiveness,” News, April 1]. When you take out a loan, responsibility demands you pay it back.
If the field of study you chose was inadequate to accommodate that, then you chose poorly. I do not wish to pay for your misjudgment. Granted that certain fields — medicine in particular — are inordinately expensive, but most are not. Full disclosure: I paid for my children’s education.
